Averlea was originally a Bed & Breakfast Establishment, Mr & Mrs Evely purchased the property in 1982 and they ran it as a bed & breakfast for approximately 2 years. In 1984 Mr Evely who at the time was a psychiatric nurse at Penrice Hospital was approached and asked if they would consider taking in a client for care. They were then approached by Mrs Liz Lovett who was a Macmillan Nurse with a view to turning it into a ‘Half Way House’ for Mount Edgecombe Hospice.
At the time Registration was not required and they took in three clients. It was after this that Mr & Mrs Evely decided there was a need for a residential home for the elderly in the area, so the property was converted into a residential home with nine beds. Since then there has been a number of alterations to make way for expansion and improvements, which has made the home what it is today.

Averlea has seen numerous changes over the years, here we can see a major extension being added to the rear of the building. Below we can see how the rear of Averlea looks today, with it’s trees and shrubbery visible.
